THE TUFO TOWNS

Limotuscany recommends visiting Sorano, an ancient Etruscan town built upon a tuff hill, as the first stop for this itinerary. Here you can pleasantly have a walk along the narrow streets and alleys of the old town center and take beautiful pictures from picturesque viewpoints. From Sorano, in approximately half an hour, you can reach Pitigliano, the largest town in this area, which was also an ancient Etruscan settlement. Walking around the old town center, full of medieval monuments, where you will find that all the buildings are made of tuff, it will be possible to visit the Jewish Synagogue of this town, one of the most remarkable Jewish temples that can be admired in Tuscany. Limotuscany also recommends Pitigliano to have lunch in one of its typical restaurants, that serve tasty local specialties such as wild boar, truffles and porcini mushrooms. On the way back, you can stop for a short visit in Sovana, which was another important Etruscan hamlet. The Duomo is the most remarkable medieval monument in the old town center: inside the church you can admire the oldest pre-Romanesque ciborium (VIII century A.D.) in Tuscany.
