Built in the 12th Century next to the Cathedral, the belltower soon began to sink and lean, keeping the inhabitants of Pisa in great apprehension over the centuries, but ultimately becoming a world-famous landmark and the symbol of the city.
The wide grassy expanse called Piazza dei Miracoli comprises also the Cathedral and the Battistero, also built using the famous white marble from the quarries at Carrara.
After lunch in one of the typical restaurants, the car will take you to Lucca, famous for its intact Renaissance city walls whose top is now a beautiful tree-lined promenade.
Don’t miss the peculiar Piazza Ovale built upon the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater, and shop for souvenirs in the traditional craft workshops.
